1- Look after your skin
One thing that I didn't do properly as a teenager, was to cleanse or moisturise my skin. I used to wipe makeup off with just a baby wipe and then wash my face with warm water. You should try and find a cleansing routine that suits you. There are so many great products on the market now, which means you don't have to spend a fortune on expensive skincare products. Clean and Clear is a great example, its so cheap and it works for so many people!
2- Don't wash your hair every day
This something that I regret the most. My hair gets greasy so quickly now because I used to wash it every day. I am currently trying to get into a routine where i'm not washing my hair every night, up to yet I can leave my hair for 1 and a half days without it feeling and looking disgusting, i've started using dry shampoo on the second day of unwashed hair and I'm finding that its helping a lot, you just have to get past the stage of your hair feeling gross, but trust me don't wash it every day and buy yourself some dry shampoo!
3- Find the closest colour match foundation
When I was 14 I started to wear foundation and I never got the right shade. I just used to pick up a shade that looked like it suited my skin and it never did, it was always too dark and sometimes I even got the dreaded line around my jaw (HORRENDOUS) I always test foundations on the inside of my wrist and find a close match this way. If you're going to higher end brands like MAC you can get colour matched by the makeup artists. One tip if you're unsure of the shade you need, is to always go a bit lighter with foundation, this is probably the safest thing to do because you can darken it up with a powder or bronzer!
4- Stay away from your eyebrows!
I never used to touch my brows when I was younger and my friend once came over and offered to pluck them for me, stupidly I let a 14 year old touch my eyebrows. She made them look so thin and they didn't really match at all. I used to have pretty thick brows which I would love to have back but they have never really been the same since. I only really pluck the stray hairs on my brows and keep the arch shape but other than that I've never let anyone touch my eyebrows since that day! If you're going to get your eyebrows done, I would recommend getting them waxed or threaded by a professional and definitely don't let your 14 old friends do it for you!
5- Wear makeup for you, not anyone else
I used to wear makeup when I started to get spots. I wore the makeup because I thought that people wouldn't want to see my blemished/spotty skin and I thought that if I wore makeup, less people would focus on my blemishes. I have now learnt that people don't really care what your makeup or skin looks like. Now I wear makeup for ME because I enjoy applying the makeup, testing out different techniques and trying new things, I no longer wear makeup for other people which is something you should always keep in mind. Ask yourself... why do I wear makeup?
